Most people know that Google Earth is a great atlas of the world, but if you are in Bath (as we are), then Fresh Logic Studios (which is entirely Internet based) also have excellent pictures. Have a look!

We use and recommend various VOIP (Internet telephony) companies, such as VoipFone, Gradwell, Sipgate and VoipCheap. We would only ever suggest Skype for home users, purely to call other Skype users; in our opinion, Skype is not a professional solution.

For home users, there is some great free software to help protect your PC against viruses, hackers and assorted spyware. Most of the following links also have professional versions which should be used by commercial organisations.

A free (for non-commercial use) anti-virus program which is a favourite of ours is from Avast. It is easy to install and use, and very good at updating itself automatically.

Another very good and highly recommended free (again, for non-commercial use) anti-virus program is from AVG Grisoft.
In the fight against spyware (also known as adware) we recommend using (at least) both AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Plagued by spam? If you are using MS Outlook 2000 or later, then have a look at SpamBayes. The highly acclaimed K9 program can be used by most email programs, including Outlook Express.

A pretty good firewall is the well-known one from ZoneAlarm - there’s a basic version available for free.

And finally, Opera - the safest of all browsers - is now available free. Avant is a another browser that’s pretty good at stopping those annoying pop-ups, and third of our personal preferences is Firefox from Mozilla. Of course, you could use Internet Explorer too, if you really want to ...

We use PlusNet ourselves, and are generally happy with this Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is our personal experience and impression that they provide a somewhat better - and often cheaper - service than the big advertisers such as BT, TalkTalk and so on.

However, in practice most people would be paying £14.99 per month for their broadband. If you sign up to PlusNet by clicking on the advert above, then we at Odin IT Consultancy make the princely sum of 50p per month as a referrer - just thought we’d declare our interest!
